Mistakes that brought bankruptcy to 50 Cent
He lied about a possible Bitcoin fortune
In January 2014, the rapper boasted on social media that he received 700 Bitcoins as payment for his album “Animal Ambition”. 50 Cent bragged on Instagram that 700 bitcoins would be worth between $7 and $8.5 million as the value of Bitcoin rose. 50 Cent later told a court that he never owned and does not own any Bitcoins, nor does he have a Bitcoin account.
The rapper could not afford the house
In 2015, 50 Cent filed for bankruptcy with $36 million in debt and $20 million in assets. In early 2017, 50 Cent emerged from bankruptcy after paying off $22 million in debt.
He filed for bankruptcy
In 2015, the music world and 50 Cent fans were shocked when he announced that he was filing for bankruptcy. When the rapper filed for Chapter 11, he cited that he had approximately $36 million in debt and less than $20 million in assets. As a result, he worked with a judge to create a $23 million debt repayment plan over five years. Thanks to the payment from a legal malpractice lawsuit, 50 Cent managed to pay off his debt much faster than the allotted five years.
He was ordered to pay $7 million to the woman he defamed
In 2015, 50 Cent had to pay $5 million in moral damages to Lastonia Leviston, the girlfriend of Rick Ross, one of 50 Cent’s biggest rivals. The rapper released a video of himself and Lastonia having sex in an attempt to humiliate his opponent. The amount increased to $7 million after the appeal.
The clothing line failed
In 2003, 50 Cent started a clothing line called G-Unit Clothing, after the hip hop group he formed. G-Unit clothing was extremely popular when it first came out, and 50 Cent made a lot of money because of it. However, in 2008, he severed ties with Marc Ecko Enterprises, and, unfortunately, the line hasn’t fared as well since. The clothing line that was once in many stores, is nowadays only sold online.
Childhood
On July 6, 1975, 50 Cent was born under his real name Curtis James Jackson III. He was born in Queens, a borough of New York City, and spent his childhood in the South Jamaican neighborhood of the borough. His mother, Sabrina, was a drug dealer who died in a fire when Jackson was only eight years old. Jackson never met his father, and after his mother died, he was raised by his grandmother. His childhood was challenging and he took up boxing and illegal substance dealing while still in primary school. Despite this, he successfully earned his GED, an alternative to a high school diploma.
His name was inspired by 1980s Brooklyn gangster Kevin Martin, also known as 50 Cent. He said he chose the name because it “says everything I want it to say. I’m the same type of person that 50 Cent was. I secure the things I need by any means.”
Career
When 50 Cent was in his late teens, he began an amateur rap career. At 21, he met D.J. Jam Master Jay of the hip-hop group Run-DMC. Jay taught him many important aspects of songwriting and music production, such as how to structure songs, write choruses, count bars, and record.
In 2000, 50 Cent recorded his first album, “Power of the Dollar”, but it was never released. However, the lead single from the album, “How to Rob”, was released commercially and became a huge success. Jackson’s official debut mixtape, “Guess Who’s Back?” was released in 2002, contributing to his rise to fame.
Eminem, another rapper, heard the mixtape and was so impressed that he flew with 50 Cent to meet the producer, Dr. Dre. In 2003, 50 Cent released his debut album titled “Get Rich Or Die Tryin”, which became an instant commercial success. Two years later, he released “The Massacre”, his second commercially successful album. His 2007 album “Curtis” was the second best-selling album of the year, behind only Kanye West‘s “Graduation”.
