The history of A&W Restaurants starts back in June 20, 1919, in California with Roy W. Allen and his first root beer stand. After four years Allen and Frank Wright partnered and opened their first drive-in restaurant in Sacramento, California, where they sold the root beer from Allan’s stand. The name of the restaurant is a combination of the founders’ names, Allen&Wright.
Allen bought Wright’s stake in the company in 1924 and in 1925 Allen started franchising the root beer. Meanwhile, the franchisees introduced new items to the menu and operated on their own.
In 1950 Roy Allen sold the A&W business and retired.
During its expansion years, after 1950, A&W franchisees were signing twenty- and twenty-five-years agreements under the older model.
In 1956 A&W expanded to Canada and opened new locations in Montreal and Winnipeg. 2,000 A&W restaurants were opened by 1960. Moreover, in the 1970s they had more locations than Mcdonald’s. In the following years, A&W expanded internationally and opened new restaurants in Malaysia and the Philippines.
Currently, there aren’t as many A&W locations as they used to be in the past. Now they have only slightly more than 900 restaurants operating in Southeast Asia and the United States.
A&W restaurants offer their customers various dining options such as eat-in, drive-in, and drive-thru. The interior design of these eateries features traditional booth seating, but there are also some locations that offer outdoor seating options with picnic tables and chairs.
This restaurant chain prides itself on creating a family-focused ambiance. Their staff is very friendly, accommodating and welcoming, so guests don’t have a lot to complain about.
A&W’s menu includes classic fast-food items such as corn dog nuggets, hot dogs, chicken strips, hamburgers, corn dogs, onion rings, and French fries. However, the most popular item from A&W Restaurants is their root beer float. This drink is served in an ice-cold frosty glass and is made of creamy ice cream and their own brand of root beer. Also, their onion rings and Papa Burger are very appreciated by the customers.
A&W Restaurant’ ‘menu prices are reasonable and affordable. For instance, their root beer floats cost around $5, a burger meal costs almost $7 and for a side, such as fries, chili cheese fries, or cheese curds, you will have to pay anywhere between $3 and $7.
Plan on spending anywhere between $7 and $10 for a combo like Original Bacon Cheeseburger, Papa Burger, Cheeseburger, Original Bacon Double Cheeseburger, Coney Dog, or Grilled/Crispy Chicken.
A&W Restaurants offers a Kids’ menu as well, which includes meals such as Chicken Strips, Cheeseburger, Corn Dog Nuggets, Hamburger, and Hot Dog. Each of these costs around $6 and is served along with a Kid’s side, a Kid’s drink, and a special prize.
A&W Restaurants were and still are one of Americans’ favorite family eateries thanks to the tasty all-American fast-food items, great service, indulgent root beer floats, and welcoming staff.
