Brand History

Ben & Jerry’s company was founded in 1978 by two friends named Jerry Greenfield and Ben Cohen. They opened their first location in Burlington, Vermont. The idea of opening their own ice cream store came from Cohen’s health problem. Ben has a rhinitis condition known as anosmia, which prevents him from recognizing smells and tastes. He said he has no idea about different flavors and has difficulty determining the differences between wines or spices, but has a strong sense of texture to compensate. This is what led to the appearance of their signature chunks.
