Brand history
The California Pizza Kitchen business was launched in 1985 by attorneys Larry Flax and Rick Rosenfield. With $350,000 invested from friends and $200,000 in bank loans, Rosenfield and Flax leased the space for their first restaurant on Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills, California, United States. The restaurant’s first menu, which included the well-known BBQ Chicken Pizza, was created by Ed LaDou.

The new eatery was a real success and soon California Pizza Kitchen expanded all over Southern California. 26 CPK locations were opened by 1992. The company opened another fifteen stores in 1993, and twenty-eight more the next year.
In 2011, an affiliate of private equity company Golden Gate Capital bought the California Pizza Kitchen business.
In 2013, CPK began to serve Gluten Intolerance Group (GIG) certified gluten-free pizzas in all of its privately-owned locations, except for the franchised ones.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CPK filed for bankruptcy in July 2020. However, in November 2020, the company emerged from bankruptcy.
Nowadays, there are more than 250 California Pizza Kitchen stores located in thirty-two U.S. states and ten other countries, such as Australia, Chile, Costa Rica, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, and Canada.
