Childhood and youth

The future rap queen Cardi B aka Belcalis Almanzar was born on October 11, 1992, in the Bronx, one of the five boroughs of New York, in a poor family of a Dominican father and a mother of African-Trinidadian origin.  Both the name and the first name are Spanish translations of some Arabic words. In Arabic, Belcalis is a reference to the Queen of Sheeba, and Almanzar means “the one who watches over”.

The rapper told Jimmy Fallon that her sister’s name is Hennesy (a brand of whiskey) and that everyone jokingly calls her Bacardi (a brand of rum). In the end, she shortened this nickname and that’s how her stage name was born.

She spent a lot of time at her grandmother’s house on her father’s line in Manhattan. She was part of one of the most active groups in the area, dealing with drug trafficking and sales. However, she realized that it is not exactly a good path to follow, so she gave up.

She briefly took a job at a neighborhood store but was quickly fired, and her next job was at the strip club across the street. She was still a minor when she started stripping in front of customers, but she claims it was the decision that saved her life. She had dropped out of school, her mother had kicked her out of the house, she had no money in her pocket, and was trapped in a relationship marked by abuse and violence. Striptease brought her the money she needed to live decently and go back to school, even though she didn’t finish her studies.

Career beginnings

Rapper Cardi B climbed the charts like a mountaineer climbs a hill: a piece of cake. “Bodak Yellow” propelled her out of the club, where she wasn’t afraid to twerk in front of action-hungry men straight onto the biggest stages. Obviously, success never comes alone but is beautifully packaged with tons of hate.

Cardi B started flirting with dancing and rap music, and the short videos posted on Vine and Instagram started to bring her more and more followers. Encouraged by the reactions on social media, Cardi B signed up for Love & Hip Hop: New York, a show made on VH1, and the reactions were not slow to appear. She was named the star of season 6, the one in which she made her debut, and in season 7 people praised her, on the one hand, for her style and challenged her, on the other, for her turbulent relationship with her boyfriend, who was in prison.

After 2 seasons on VH1, the singer decided it was time to do more in the artistic area, so she left the set only to enter the recording studio. 2 years of recordings and releases followed, and appearances through various broadcasts or television shows – including one by Khloe Kardashian, and even collaborations – Cardi B was more and more present and became more and more visible.

Music career

Cardi B CloseupCardi B was so interesting that in early 2017 Atlantic Records decided to offer her a contract. It was the step she needed to move forward. She began to perform on stage alongside established names in the industry, and in the spring came the big news: she was nominated at the BET Awards in 2 categories: Best New Artist and Best Hip-Hop Singer. She didn’t win, but the audience at the concerts where she was also on stage started to grow.

In the summer of 2017, Cardi B released her first single, Bodak Yellow, which steadily climbed the charts, so that in only 3 months it reached first place in the Billboard Top 100. The singer thus became the first female rapper to achieve such a performance since Lauryn Hill in 1998. She was then nominated for the Grammy Awards and won Single of the Year at the BET Hip Hop Awards. She continued to perform alongside established artists, becoming in January 2018 the first woman with 5 singles at the same time in the Top 10 Billboard/Hot R&B/Hip Hop. Her first album, Invasion of Privacy, was received in the same way as her first single, with increasingly flattering reviews – “one of the strongest debuts of the millennium” – and went straight to number one in the charts.

The singer was heavily criticized on social media, with many netizens saying she didn’t deserve to receive the Grammy Award because she didn’t work for success.

In a video posted on Instagram, Cardi B confessed to inviting men to a hotel, giving them illegal substances, and taking their money, stating that she felt she had to do these things to survive. “Nothing was given to me. Nothing!”, declared the artist before making the revelations from her past.

Cardi B – a scandalous marriage

Even in her personal life, things are not much quieter for the singer. In 2017, she secretly married another famous rapper, Offset, but the two did not admit it until the artist announced that she was pregnant. But that happened in the spotlight on Saturday Night Live, when she wore a prom dress designed to show everyone that she was having a baby. In July 2018, the singer gave birth to her first daughter, and in December she announced that she and Offset had separated.

The anger did not last long and the rapper was welcomed back home. Rumors of separation have always hovered over them, especially since it seems that Offset is not exactly a faithful man. Something that Cardi B also stated when she filed for divorce in 2020.

Real estate

Cardi B together with her former husband, the rapper Offset, bought a mansion in Buckhead, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, for $5.79 million in December 2019. The house was listed for $10 million in 2017.
