Brand History

The history of Carl’s Jr. restaurant starts back in 1941 in Los Angeles when Carl Karcher, who was a truck driver at that time and his wife Margaret bought a hot dog cart. In the beginning, they were selling tamales, hot dogs, and chili dogs for around $2 each, and soda for around $1.

The first full-service Carl’s Jr. restaurant was opened in 1945, in Anaheim, California at 1180 N. Palm St. and it was named Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue. The hamburgers were added for the first time on the menu in 1946.

The first two Carl’s Jr. restaurants were opened in 1956 in Brea and Anaheim. These two were named Carl’s Jr. because they were the smaller version of the first Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue restaurant.

There were four Carl’s Jr. restaurants in Orange County, California by the end of the 1950s. Also, at that time the company had a new supervisor, Carl’s younger brother, Donald F. Karcher.

There were more than 100 Carl’s Jr. restaurants in Southern California by the year 1975. The first out-of-state location was opened in 1979 in Las Vegas.

Carl Karcher Enterprises, the owner of Carl’s Jr. restaurants, became a publicly held company in 1981 when it had 300 locations in operation. Three years later, in 1984, Carl’s Jr. was franchised for the first time.

Nowadays, there are around 3,665 company-operated or franchised Carl’s Jr. restaurants located in 44 states in America and in 39 foreign countries such as Vietnam, Australia, Turkey, Belarus, Thailand, Bolivia, Spain, Brazil, New Zealand, Dominican Republic, India, France, Mexico, Honduras, China, Canada, Japan, Panama, and Costa Rica, to name a few.
