A Grammy Award winner, with millions of albums sold, dozens of hits at number one on the international charts, with over a billion views on YouTube, Eminem is one of the most acclaimed hip hop artists. But it was not easy for him to reach the heights of success: with a substance-addicted mother, who gave birth to him at the age of 15, and a father who left them, Eminem struggled a lot to become a world-renowned rapper. Today, he is considered one of the most influential artists of all time, with Rolling Stone magazine calling him the “King of Hip Hop”.

Early Life
Eminem, by his real name Marshal Mathers III, was born on October 17, 1972, in Missouri. His mother gave birth to him as a teenager and he spent the first years of his life moving from one city to another. They lived in social housing because his substance-addicted mother could not keep a job for more than a few months. Eventually, they settled in a notorious neighborhood in Detroit, where Marshal was often harassed by older children. He was no better at school either, where he was constantly the target of the evils of others. He even got to the hospital with a cerebral hemorrhage following an episode of bullying. Constantly assaulted, he began to have nightmares and, as a result, gave up going to school: he repeated the ninth grade three times.
At the age of 14, he discovered his passion for rap music. He often skipped school to participate in rap battle contests. He then took his stage name M&M, from its initials, which later became Eminem. As a white boy in a world dominated by black rappers, he was often booed on stage.
Slim Shady
At 27, Eminem was still struggling to pay the rent for the caravan he lived in when his first album, The Slim Shady LP, was released. It was something unheard of — his alter ego, Slim Shady, turned out to be a hard-to-ignore character — an unscrupulous comedian with mischievous jokes who combined childish humor with irony, sarcasm, and anger. Eminem’s lyrics were full of frustration, revenge, and violence.
The album was an instant success, selling three million copies and bringing Eminem his first Grammy Award. The money did not take long to appear and the first thing he bought was a house for his family in a safe neighborhood.
Meeting Dr. Dre
The “white boy” in the hip-hop world was initially ridiculed: no one took him seriously. However, the moment he met Dr. Dre, a veteran of the music industry, changed his destiny. Thus, from a bankrupt kid who earned five dollars an hour washing dishes and living in a caravan, Eminem became one of the best-selling hip hop artists of all time. His style was fresh, bold and controversial, and, above all, original.
Awards and Milestone
Eminem has won an Academy Award for the best song “Lose Yourself”, 15 Grammy Awards, seventeen Billboard Awards, and eight American Music Awards.
“The Marshall Mathers LP 2”, Eminem’s eighth studio album and seventh on the Billboard 200, sold over 700,000 copies in the first week since its release, according to data provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The material made by the singer is a continuation of the album from 2000, “The Marshall Mathers LP”, which, at that time, had reached the 30th position on the Billboard chart, with only 10,000 units sold.
Personal Life
At the age of 15, he met the woman who would become his wife and the mother of his daughter – Kim. The two became parents in 1995, with Kim giving birth to a baby girl – Hailie. The couple then married in 1999, but they separated and then reconciled several times. Their relationship did not last long, with Kim later becoming the subject of his songs. Both the artist’s mother and his ex-wife were criticized in Eminem’s songs.
Real Estate
Eminem bought an 8,900-square-foot house in Clinton Township, Michigan for $1.483 million in 2000.
Also, he spent $4.8 million on a 15,000-square-foot house in Oakland County, Michigan in 2003. Eventually, he sold this house in 2017 for $1.9 million.
Summary
Eminem’s net worth is $230 million, being one of the best-selling musicians of all time. During his career, he sold more than 170 million records, and between 2004 and 2019 he earned around $280 million. He made around $400 million in his entire career.
