Brand History

The Famous Dave’s restaurant was founded by Dave Anderson, a native American with a great passion for barbecue. He opened his first restaurant in 1994 in Hayward Wisconsin and named it “Famous Dave’s of America”.

This restaurant became successful thanks to the barbecue lovers and the efforts made by Dave to develop his business. For instance, he spent many years in different spots such as the Memphis storefront BBQ smokehouses in the Appalachians before opening his first location. Also, he took many cooking lessons to improve his skills.

Over time the restaurant expanded all over the Midwest. The second location was opened in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1995. Also, the third location was opened in Minneapolis one year later.

In October 1996 Famous Dave’s company went public and this resulted in a further expansion. Moreover, the restaurant implemented unique concepts like hunting lodge themes, roadhouse, blues club, and barbecue shack. The company also offers an online shop, from where you can purchase gift sets, barbecue sauce, gift cards, seasoning, books, marinade, music, t-shirts, and hats.

Even though Famous Dave’s expanded in a short period of time, its stocks fell significantly and the company went through management changes in 1997. Martin O’Dowd became the new chief executive officer in 2000 and he focused on expanding and improving the company through franchising.

Nowadays, there are more than 200 Famous Dave’s restaurants all over the United States, including Wyoming, Arizona, Virginia, California, Utah, Colorado, Texas, Delaware, Tennessee, Florida, South Dakota, Iowa, New Jersey, Illinois, New York, North Dakota, and Maryland.

Internationally, Famous Dave’s can be found in Dubai, Winnipeg, Al Ain, and Abu Dhabi.

You have two options for the restaurant’s award-winning ribs: the baby back ribs and the St. Louis-styled spared ribs. Expect to pay anywhere between $15 and $17 for a “half baby” portion of baby back ribs, and $21 to $23 for a “big baby” portion. As for the St. Louis-styled spare ribs, you will have to pay $13 to $14 for a 1/3 slab, $16 to $18 for a half slab, and $23 to $25 for a full slab.

The Classics of the menu include the Southside rib tips, the Texas beef brisket, the Georgia chopped pork, the country roasted chicken, the boneless or traditional wings, the barbecued chicken, the cedar plank salmon, the Sweetwater catfish, and the chicken tenders. These cost anywhere between $14 and $17. For the brisket burger, you will have to pay $8 to $14, while the combos cost $5.5 to $25.

The Famous Dave’s menu also includes a wide range of appetizers, salads, sides, soups, and sandwiches. Expect to pay anywhere between $8 and $10 for the appetizers, $2.5 to $5 for the sides, $4 to $14 for a salad, and $9 to $15 for a sandwich.
