Brand History

The Fazoli’s business concept was created by the multi-brand restaurant group Jerrico, Inc. The first Fazoli’s restaurant was opened in 1988, in Lexington, Kentucky. This business was very successful and there opened new locations. Two years after opening Seed Restaurant Group, Inc., based in Lexington, Kentucky, purchased Fazoli’s restaurants. The new owner continued to expand the chain by introducing new Italian dishes on the menu such as baked pizza, desserts, Submarino sandwiches, salads, pizza, and entrees. Six more restaurants were opened in Lexington pretty soon after that.

In 1991 the first location outside of Kentucky was opened, in Orlando, Florida by McKenzie Enterprises. The company had 28 locations by 1992. The chain expanded to the St. Louis, Missouri market in 1993, and in 1994 the 50th Fazoli’s restaurant was opened in Auburn, Indiana. Nineteen franchised locations and 73 company locations were opened by the end of 1994. The next year, the company opened more restaurants in Ohio, Iowa, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and Colorado. Also, in 1995 the 100th restaurant was opened in Oviedo, Florida. Another set of restaurants was opened in 1996, including 29 franchised and 55 company-owned locations.

The company started to focus more on expanding through franchises in 1997 and ran an aggressive marketing campaign in the Southwest and Texas. So, more and more locations were opened all over the United States.

The private equity group Sun Capital Partners purchased Fazoli’s chain in 2006, but they sold it to Sentinel Capital after nine years, in 2015.

Nowadays there are more than 200 Fazoli’s restaurants in 26 states including Utah, Kentucky, Nevada, California, Indiana, Idaho, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Over time Fazoli’s received many awards and recognitions for the good work it does in the restaurant industry. Some of these include the Best Kids Menu in America offered by Restaurant Hospitality Magazine in 2003 and the COEX Innovation Award in Marketing/Service received in 2015.
