Founded in 1935 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Friendly’s is a restaurant chain with locations on the East Coast of the United States. They offer diner-style cuisine dishes, such as burgers, salads, and entrees, and emphasize its twenty-two ice cream flavors. Brand history

Friendly’s company was founded in 1935 by the brothers Curtis Blake and S. Prestley Blake. Their first restaurant was located in Springfield, Massachusetts. Actually, it was a small ice cream store called “Friendly”, where you could buy double-dip cones for 5 cents.

After five years, in 1940, they opened a second location in West Springfield and expanded their food menu. Blake’s brothers closed the business during World War II and kept it closed until it ended.

In 1951, ten Friendly’s locations were operating in western Massachusetts and Connecticut. Due to this expansion in 1960, the headquarters of the company was moved from Springfield to Wilbraham.

In 1974, five hundred Friendly’s restaurants were opened in Midwest, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic. The same year they opened a food processing and distribution plant in Troy, Ohio.

The Blake brothers retired in 1979 and sold Friendly’s chain to Hershey Foods Corporation. In 1988, the business was bought by Donald N. Smith and Friendly’s became part of Tennessee Foods.

Friendly Ice Cream Corporation debuted on the NASDAQ stock exchange in 1997 under the symbol FRND. They moved to the American Stock Exchange in 2007 with the symbol FRN.

The group of experienced restaurant investors Amici Partners Group, LLC purchased Friendly’s in 2021.

Currently, 119 Friendly’s restaurants are open across the United States in states such as South Carolina, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, Florida, New Jersey, Maine, New Hampshire, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

Friendly’s menu includes food items such as super melts & sandwiches, burgers, salads, soups, starters, entrees, breakfast classics, kid’s meals, beverages, and, obviously, ice cream.

You should plan on spending $9 to $15 for a breakfast such as Hash & Eggs, Belgian Waffle, Ham & Cheese Omelette, Brioche French Toast, Steel Cut Oatmeal, Blueberry Muffin-Top Pancakes, and others.

The starters, soups, and salads cost anywhere between $6 and $14, and you will be able to choose between Chicken Noodle soup, Starter Salad, Apple Harvest Chicken Salad, Mini Mozzarella Sticks, Country Chicken Tenders, Cheeseburger Sliders, and many more.

Expect to pay more than $10 and less than $18 for a burger. Your options would include the Veggie Burger, All American Burger, Bacon Cheeseburger, and Honey BBQ Burger, to name a few. Also, a sandwich such as Philly Steak & Cheese Wrap, Turkey Club Supermelt, Tuna Roll, or Buffalo Chicken Wrap cost around $11.

The price of ice cream depends on the ordered size and starts at around $5 and goes up to almost $10. Some of the options include Peppermint Stick Sundae, Royal Banana Split, Ultimate Cookies ‘N Cream Sundae, Kids Hot Fudge Sundae, Mint Cookie Crunch Sundae, Nuts Over Caramel Sundae, and Hunka Chunka PB Fudge Sundae.

Usually, Friendly’s offers its clients free refills for coffee, iced tea, and soft drinks after and during meals. Also, the restaurant often runs promotions such as TGI Fridays where clients can get free refills on other drinks such as slushies. Their menu includes a wide variety of gluten-free options.
