Is Adobe Premiere Pro Worth It?

Adobe Premiere DashboardFor most average consumers simply looking to edit casual social media content or home videos, free software may be perfectly suitable rather than subscribing to Premiere Pro.

However, for businesses and professional full-time video creators earning income from production, Premiere Pro delivers tremendous value that often offsets its costs:

Smooth Real-Time Editing Performance

  • Optimized playback engine and GPU acceleration for lag-free 4K+ editing, effects, and color grading even on longer timelines.

Endless Effects, Transitions, and Customization

  • The industry leader with hundreds of professional presets, animations, plugins, LUTs, and tools for color, motion graphics, subtitles, audio, etc.

Support for Cutting Edge Formats and Hardware

  • Built to handle emerging standards like HDR, 360 video, multi-cam workflows, 10-bit codecs, and advanced camera formats. Leverages the latest GPUs.

Tight Integration with the Adobe Ecosystem

  • Designed to perfectly complement programs like Photoshop, After Effects, Audition, Lightroom, and Animate through its common interface. Media assets flow smoothly between apps.

Reliability and Support Infrastructure

  • Team Projects enables collaboration across editors. Technical support resolves issues promptly. Built on decades of refinement by Adobe engineers.

For these reasons, Premiere Pro justifies its ongoing cost for most serious video professionals through the productivity and quality it facilitates. But free alternatives meet many hobbyists' basic needs.

Expert Thoughts

Sarah Fields, Video Production Company Owner

"I recommend new users start with the single Premiere Pro app plan. Only upgrade to the full Creative Cloud suite if you find yourself needing After Effects, Photoshop, or Illustrator more. No use overpaying for apps that go unused."Alan Tanner, Professional Videographer"Don't buy add-on plug-ins right away. Learn to leverage what's built-in first, then identify specific limitations before spending money on effects packages."Cindy Wright, Graphic Designer"Keep costs down by avoiding month-to-month payments. The annual plan brings the per month average way down. Then I'd recommend the prepaid option for maximum savings if you know you'll use it long-term."

Final Words

Adobe Premiere Pro's subscription pricing gives ongoing access to industry-leading video editing tools. Individuals can edit royalty-free footage for YouTube, while businesses can create impactful social media and marketing content. While not the cheapest option, the high-level functionality makes the costs worthwhile for professionals.

Answers to Common Questions

Is Premiere a one-time purchase?

No, since 2013 Adobe has strictly offered Premiere Pro via ongoing Creative Cloud subscription only, with no option to buy a lifetime license. Lower annual plans help reduce long-term costs.

What are the disadvantages of Adobe Premiere?

The main downsides are the mandatory subscription pricing model and that it only runs on Windows and Mac. The high system requirements also demand expensive, powerful hardware to use Premiere smoothly.

How many computers can I install Adobe Premiere Elements on?

For individual license holders, Adobe Premiere Pro can be activated on two computers. A single-app subscription allows use on one Mac or PC, while All Apps plans permit installs on two devices - either Mac, PC, or a combination.

    Mel Strait says:

I use both Premiere and Audition for most of my editing projects and did so during my time as an active university professor. That said, any justification for subscription only is PR with a downside that lead me to explore other options. Along with the updates to the codecs and formats, comes changes in the interface which I absolutely hate. I don’t want to have to look for features I use or have used and need quickly. My usage has always been inconsistent. I don’t want to have to pay when I’m between projects. Yes, the software is good, but Adobe isn’t being responsive to all their users.
