Jack’s Family Restaurants, known as simply Jack’s, is an American fast-food restaurant chain, based and headquartered in Birmingham. This chain is specialized in serving mainly fried chicken, burgers, and breakfast, but also other different food items such as French fries and soft drinks.

People choose to come and eat at Jack’s due to the home-style cooked meals. They taste very good, the servings are huge and the service is more than great.

Brand History

The history of Jack’s Family Restaurants dates back to 1960 when Jack Caddell opened a walk-up stand in the Birmingham suburb of Homewood, Alabama. At the beginning, known as Jack’s Hamburgers, the first menu included “fish-on-a-bun”, French fries, hamburgers, and milkshakes.

Before founding Jack’s, Caddell owned the Pig Trail Inn, a barbeque restaurant, very popular among the teenagers from Homewood. He decided to open Alabama’s first fast-food chain being inspired by the early success of the expanding McDonald’s hamburger chain in 1950s.

Five years later there were Jack’s locations opened all over more than half of the Birmingham area, including Alabaster, Vestavia Hills and Bessemer. In the following period, Jack’s expanded outside the Birmingham area, to Montgomery, Huntsville, Auburn and Anniston, and even outside the Alabama state, with restaurants in Charleston, South Carolina and Jackson, Mississippi.

In the 1970 Jack’s was bought by Florida Capital company. Between 1970 and 1978, the new CEO of the company, Jimmy Moreland has led an aggressive expansion campaign which resulted in Jack’s growing from 17 locations to approximately 80 locations in four states. However, many Jack’s restaurants were forced to close in the early 1980s due to the massive growth among fast-food competitors.

In 1989 LaRussa bought the sole franchise rights to Jack’s from Florida Capital. Under this ownership the company grew to more than 150 locations until 2015 when it was sold to the Canadian private equity company Onex Corporation.

In 2019, Jack’s was purchased by the private equity firm AEA Investors.

Today, a typical Jack’s restaurant has a surface of approximately 3,200 square feet and 25 to 30 employees. Nowadays, there are more than 200 Jack’s Family Restaurants.

Our review

Jack’s lunch and dinner menus still include hamburgers served along with many different sides such as mashed potatoes, French fries, green beans and coleslaw. Their menu includes other entrees and fried chicken as well.

Jack’s breakfast menu includes biscuits served with cheese, sausages, egg, ham, bacon, or steak, but there are also pancakes. Some other customer favorites are the milkshakes and the Blue Bell ice cream.

In case you go for the first time at Jack’s Family Restaurants, you should definitely try one of their signature burgers, their “Fish-on-a-bun”, the fries and shakes as well. Also, the breakfast dishes are a must.

The ambiance and the service in the Jack’s Family Restaurants are great in all their locations. In general, the staff is friendly and the waiting time is pretty short.
