Brand History

The history of the Jimmy John’s restaurant chain begins in 1983 when John Liautaud decided to start his own business. He was determined to do it by his father, who offered him only two options one year before the graduation from Elgin Academy. He had to choose between joining the army or starting a business. He didn’t take too much time to think and chose the second option.

With a loan of $25,000 from his father, he started a hot dog business, where his father owned a share of 48%. John realized pretty soon that the hot dog business is not profitable and took the decision to open a sandwich shop. So, he opened his first sandwich restaurant in a garage in Charleston, on 13^th January 1982.

John purchased his father’s share in the business and became the only owner in 1985. The second store was opened in Macomb and the third one in Champaign. He didn’t stop there and opened more stores in the following years, plus in 1993 began franchising. The first franchise store was opened in Wisconsin and in 2001 was opened the 100^th store in Michigan.
