Brand history
The story of Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken starts back in 1962, after the sale of KFC. That year Lee Cummings, who was the nephew of Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder of KFC, started to develop his own chicken recipe, known later as “Famous Recipe”. In 1966, Lee Cumming together with Harold Omer founded “Harold’s Take-Home”, which later would be known as Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken. Their first restaurant was located in Lima, Ohio.
The same year, in 1966, Lee opened the first restaurant franchise in Columbus, Ohio. In the following years, more locations were opened in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Dayton, Cincinnati, and Springfield, Ohio.

In 1981 Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken chain was purchased by Shoney’s Restaurants from Nashville, Tennessee.
