How much does it cost?
Currently, the MICA Smart Bracelet is available in the US for $495 at Barneys New York and Opening Ceremony, and it also comes with a wireless data plan, AT&T, for two years.
The elegant bracelet, that looks like a handcuff, is the proof that fashion and technology industry, earlier considered divergent, now are working together, better and better, to provide wearable technology to enthusiasts. Big names from fashion and technology work together in the project, including Intel collaborations with Luxottica eyewear manufacturer, SMS Audio, Fossil Group and Swiss watch manufacturer, Tag Heuer.
Although the fashion industry is one of many market segments for carriers, ranging from health monitoring to industrial applications, BI Intelligence, Business Insider research department estimates that the wearables’ global market will grow annually with 35% in the next five years, reaching 148 million shipped units annually by 2019, up from 33 million shipped this year.
This convergence born from the combination of the two industries will make wearable technology that satisfies the needs of different types of buyers. This is what technology needs to break away from current products, which are believed to be more destined to men.
Wang, from Refinery29, says that although the style is essential, its fashion audience target knows that the most effective wearable should focus on technology first and then on fashion.
The collaborative activities undertaken for MICA still open new horizons, as they discover common interests and synergies of both industries.
