Brand History
Moe’s franchise was founded in the year of 2000 by Raving Brands. The name of the restaurant is the acronym for “Musicians, Outlaws, and Entertainers” and this theme determined the music-related artwork you can see in the original design.
However, the history of this restaurant chain starts back in the 1980s with the recent college student Martin Sprock. In his youth, he had a five-year job in the real estate business, but after his favorite bar closed, he reinvented himself as a restaurant owner. So, he made team with the bar’s former owner and reopened the bar in another location.

This first bar was a real success, so Sprock started to buy and build bars throughout Southwest America. Though, he wanted something else and sold his bar business to create the family-oriented fun restaurant, Planet Smoothie.
The first Planet Smoothie restaurant was opened in 1995 in Atlanta Georgia. Though this franchise stopped developing in 2000 and Sprock was looking for other restaurant ideas. As a result, Moe’s restaurant was opened, which is something like a “Mexican Subway”, where customers are offered a healthy fast-food experience.
The first Moe’s Southwest Grill location opened outside the United States was in Turkey, in the year of 2011. The next year, in September 2012, they opened their first restaurant in Moscow, Russia.
Nowadays, there are more than 680 Moe’s restaurants located all over the United States.
Our review
If you are going to Moe’s there are a few food items that you should not miss. For instance, the Earmuff burrito bowl has a variety of choices of meat like beef, chicken, or tofu if you are vegetarian. This bowl costs around $10. Some other recommended items include The Funk Meister Tacos, which costs around $6 and comes with your choices of steak, tofu, or chicken; and the Ruprict Vegetarian Nachos which costs around $10.
Most of the food items on Moe’s menu are called after popular culture memes like “John Coctostan” from the movie Fletch or “Julia Gulia” from the movie The Weeding Singer. Moe’s served all dishes along with free salsa and chips.
Also, the vegetarian burrito the Art Vandalay, which is sold for around $8, is named after George’s Alias in Seinfeld, while the Who Is Kaiser Salsa is named after the mysterious culprit from the Usual Suspects.
Most of Moe’s employees are college students working part-time. So, there is an exciting, fun atmosphere among the staff. The restaurant’s hygiene is average to above average, depending on the local staff. Also, the waiting time depends on the local conditions, but the busiest days are Friday Nights and the Weekends.
