Early life

Six years later, she became the first woman elected as the state’s governor in 2010 and was the youngest female governor when she took office in 2011. From January 2011 until January 2017, Haley served as the 116th Governor of South Carolina.
Haley gained national attention in 2015 when, as governor, she signed a law removing the Confederate battle flag from the grounds of the South Carolina state capitol following the death of nine black people by the hand of Dylann Roof, a white supremacist.
Another act Haley made with long-term implications was when she appointed Tim Scott to replace Sen. Jim DeMint, who retired in 2012.
