Brand History

The first O’Charley’s Restaurant and Bar was opened in 1971 by Charles Watkins in Nashville, Tennessee on the 21st Avenue South, close to Vanderbilt University. From 1971 until 1984 the restaurant was owned and operated by Mr. Watkins.

The restaurant was sold to Mr. David K. Wachtel in 1984 and on January 19 he founded the O’Charley’s, Inc. company which owned the restaurant. After that, he opened more locations and expanded into a restaurant chain. In 1987, there were locations in Nashville, Tennessee, Huntsville, Alabama, and Lexington, Kentucky. The company continued to grow over the years and in 1990 it went public.

The price of the O’Charley’s, Inc. company stocks started to decline and as a result the profits as well. So, the company executives tried to find solutions to solve this problem and one of these ways of improvement was to hire Mr. Charles F. McWhorter Jr. as a chief operating officer and senior vice president. He had the idea to change the menu and make it smaller and also to reduce the prices. Even though there was a decline, the company continued to develop, and in the year 1992, there were 37 locations.

1992 was an excellent year for O’Charley’s, Inc. company with a 37% increase in profits and a 30% increase in sales. Though, because of his commitments with other business interests, Mr. Wachtel had to resign from his role in 1994. So, the role of president and co-chairman was taken by Mr. Charles F. McWhorter Jr. Also, Mr. George L. Burns became co-chairman and chief executive.

The company was hit by a federal racial discrimination lawsuit after the resignation of Mr. Wachtel, but Mr. Burns denied it. However, in 1996 the company has settled this lawsuit. The management was also changed that year, after the resignation of Mr. McWhorter.

In the following years, the company continued to expand and by the year 1999, there were more than 106 O’Charley’s Restaurant and Bar locations.

In 2002 O’Charley’s Restaurant and Bar had more than 180 locations and the same year Forbes magazine listed the company as one of the “200 Best Small Companies in America”

Nowadays, there are more than 200 O’Charley’s Restaurant and Bar locations in 17 states of America such as Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Florida, and Alabama. However, the majority of the restaurants are located in the Midwest and South of America.

The company was sold to Fidelity National Financial in 2012.

Today O’Charley’s Restaurant and Bar is owned by American Blue Ribbon Holdings.
