Brand history

Taco Bueno’s story starts back in 1967 with the art graduate student from Abilene Christian University, Bill R. Waugh. He opened his first restaurant in Abilene, Texas. Also, he founded several other restaurant chains in the southwest of the United States. In January 2015, unfortunately, he passed away.

Taco Bueno Menu ItemSince its opening, the ownership of the company has changed many times. Unigate bought this restaurant chain in 1981 and in 1996 sold it to CKE Restaurants, which owns also the Carl’s Jr. franchise.

Just after five years, CKE Restaurants had some financial problems and sold the business to Jacobson Partners hoping to cover the debt. After another four years, the Taco Bueno chain had a new owner, more precisely Palladium Equity Partners.

Also, over time the company had several different CEOs including John Miller (2005) and Ed Lambert (2011). At this time, the CEO of Taco Bueno is Omar Janjua.

In December 2015 it was sold again, this time to TPG Growth and the current owner is Sun Holdings.

In 2000 Taco Bueno was voted the “Best Mexican Quick Service Restaurant in the Country” and considering that they have locations only in a few states across the country, this is notable recognition.

Nowadays, Taco Bueno has more than 140 stores that are located in several US states including Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Arkansas.

Our review

Taco Bueno sets itself apart from its competitors through their high-quality foods and a limited menu. Also, they allow the clients to customize their orders. For instance, Taco Bueno provides a self-serve salsa and condiment bar, that is permanently stocked with different fresh homemade salsas, but also onions, jalapenos, and Pico de Gallo. So, clients can adjust the meals according to their preferences.

The restaurant sets a high-quality standard for all its food, not only for salsas. For example, the meats are freshly seasoned and the guacamole is homemade and fresh every day.

Their most popular menu item is tacos, but customers also love the queso dip and chips and the cheesecake chimichanga.

Also, some of their locations offer delivery and catering options. One of these is the store located at the University of Oklahoma. They offer three different catering options including:

  • Basic Setup – they prepare your food and come to your location, where a buffet table is set up with chaffing dishes for you; they return to take back these after two hours;
  • Delivery – they prepare and deliver your food into disposable containers;
  • Full Service – they prepare your food, come to your location, set up everything, and for up to two hours serve your guests. Once, they are done, they clean up and leave.

The company has plans to expand this delivery service to all of its restaurants.
