Brand history

Taco Cabana Beyond MeatThe first Taco Cabana restaurant was opened in September 1978 and was located in Midtown San Antonio, at the corner of San Pedro and Hildebrand Avenue. But the story of this business starts a while back. Stehling’s parents owned the popular bar the Crystal Pistol and because they needed more parking spaces, he bought a vacant Dairy Queen property across the street. However, Felix Stehling took the decision to open a taco stand where he could serve fresh food instead of pre-prepared and pre-packaged foods.

The restaurant’s interior design and décor were created by Billie Jo Stehling, Felix Stehling’s wife. But just after the first night following the grand opening all of the patio café furniture was stolen. So, Stehling decided to keep the restaurant open twenty-four hours a day and allow take-out orders.

In 1987, after his efforts to keep the business operated and owned by the family failed, Felix Stehling hired Richard Cervera as the company’s vice president. The same year the restaurant filed a lawsuit against Two Pesos, claiming that this new eatery tried to imitate Taco Cabana by stealing their secrets and copying their ideas. The case was won by Taco Cabana, but Two Pesos continued to appeal the case until 1992 when the Supreme Court upheld the initial decision.

Actually, in 1993 Taco Cabana ended up purchasing all thirty-Two Pesos restaurants in San Antonio. Most of these were transformed into Taco Cabana restaurants. By 2005 120 locations were opened.

In 2021 Taco Cabana was purchased by Fiesta Restaurant Group, Inc. and currently, there 142 restaurants are opened in just three states (Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico).
