Brand history
Wahoo’s Fish Taco story starts back in the late 1980s. The three Chinese-Brazilian brothers Wing Liam, Eduardo “Ed” Lee and Renato “Mingo” Lee opened their first restaurant in November 1988, in Costa Mesa, California. They received $30,000 from their parents, who sold the Shanghai Pine Gardens restaurant.

The menu included a mix of flavors and dishes inspired by traditional Brazilian, Mexican, and Chinese cuisine. The main restaurant’s employees were the three brothers, who had to do all the work, take orders, prepare the food in the kitchen and serve it to the clients.
In 1994 the founders opened two new Wahoo’s Fish Taco locations, one in Laguna Beach and one in Costa Mesa. Six Wahoo’s Fish Taco restaurants were opened by the end of 1995. One of these was in Denver, Colorado, and six were in Orange County, California.
The first Wahoo’s Fish Taco restaurant outside Orange County was opened in Manhattan Beach, in 1998. By 2005 36 Wahoo’s restaurants were already opened. Since then, Wahoo’s expanded all over California and opened new restaurants in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Hawaii, New Jersey, Nebraska, and Nevada.
In 2013, by Wahoo’s Fish Taco’s 25-year anniversary, 64 locations were opened in seven states. The same year the first Wahoo’s Fish Taco international location was opened in Tokyo, Japan.
According to the company’s official website, currently, there are 47 Wahoo’s Fish Taco locations opened in six U.S. states including Southern California (30), Northern California (1), Colorado (7), Nevada (6), New Jersey (1), Texas (1), and one outside of the USA in Japan.
Our review
The atmosphere in a Wahoo’s Fish Taco location is the same as you can find in other fast-food restaurants. This is a great place to hang out with your friends. You will be able to choose between a wide variety of foods and tacos. But you must definitely try their Kale Kai salad and fish taco.
In case you are going to Wahoo’s Fish Taco alone, you should get their Banzai Burrito or 1988 Taco, while with friends you should order Baja Rolls. And, if you are really hungry, you should eat the Wahoo’s Bowl or Kalua Pig Bowl.
Plan on paying around $12 for a salad, almost $6 for a taco, $11 for a burrito, and $12 to $15 for a bowl. The kid’s meals are priced at $7 to $8 each.
You will not have to wait too long for your order at Wahoo’s Fish Taco. Some of the employees may act tedious, but if you can tolerate them, you’ll have a lot of fun.
