Brand History

White Castle is considered to be the first fast-food restaurant chain in the world. It was founded on September 13, 1921, by the insurance and real-estate man, Edgar Waldo Billy A. Ingram and the cook Walter A. Anderson.

White Castle BurgersThe first White Castel restaurant was opened in Wichita, Kansas with only $700. In the beginning, their main food item was the sliders, which were little, square hamburgers. These were sold for five cents until 1929 and until 1949 were priced at 10 cents.

At that time people avoided eating ground beef because of Upton Sinclair’s 1906 novel “The Jungle” where the poor sanitation practices in the meatpacking industry were presented. Though, Billy Ingram and Walter Anderson succeeded to change people’s perceptions thanks to the cleanliness of their restaurants.

White Castle expanded into new markets for the first time in 1959. In 1958 Billy Ingram retired in Miami where he built three White Castle locations. However, due to the poor supply distribution, the Florida location was closed in 1967.

In 2014 Time magazine labeled the White Castle slider as the most influential burger in history.

White Castle was a privately held company throughout its existence and still is. None of their restaurants are franchised. Nowadays there are around 380 White Castle locations in 13 states in America, with the greatest presence in the New York metropolitan area and Midwest. White Castle’s current markets in the United States include Columbia, Missouri; Bowling Green, Kentucky; St. Louis; Chicago; Scottsdale, Arizona; Cincinnati; Orlando; Columbus; New York, New Jersey; Dayton; Nashville; Detroit; Minneapolis, St. Paul; Indianapolis; Louisville; Las Vegas and Lexington.

Our review

As White Castle is a pioneer in the fast-food industry, you will feel the original fast-food restaurant atmosphere once you enter their door. However, they adapted to modern times and changed the setup and design a little bit.

Their top food item is the burger sliders served with fries on the side. Also, chicken rings and onion chips are common choices among clients.

The service here is outstanding as the staff is nice and friendly, and will prepare your meal in less than five minutes.
