Brand history

The story of Marie Callender’s brand starts back in the early 1930s with Cal Warrant Callender and his wife Marie, who were selling pies in Orange County and in the city of Long Beach.

In 1964, Marie’s son Don opened the first Marie Callender’s pie and coffee shop in Orange, California. After five years they had opened twelve more restaurants. Also, in 1969 they opened their first restaurants outside of California, in Houston and Las Vegas. The same year the restaurant’s menu expanded including new items such as chili & cornbread, salads, ham-stacked sandwiches, hamburgers, and other homestyle meals.

By the end of the 1970s, the chain expanded to 84 restaurants.

In 1986, Don Callender sold his family business to Ramada International for more than $80 million. Several years later, in 1990, it was bought by Wilshire Restaurant Group, Inc, and in 1999 it was sold to Saunders Karp & Megrue company.
