Brand History

The Mellow Mushroom was founded by three college students, Marc Weinstein from the University of Georgia and Mike Nicholson and Rocky Reeves, both from Georgia Tech. Their first location was opened in 1974 on Spring Street, Atlanta. Their pizzeria attracted many clients and became very popular, so more restaurants were opened in that area. Ten years later the founders of this company started franchising. So, in the late eighties, the first Mellow Mushroom franchise was opened in Atlanta. It still operates as a franchise and its headquarters are still located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Even though the first location, which was opened on Spring Street, Atlanta does not exist anymore, there are many other locations in Georgia. For instance, the “La Vista Road” location that opened in 1978, known as “Emory Mellow” is still open and is considered the oldest. In the beginning most of the restaurants were opened close to campuses because the pizzeria was very popular among students, but starting in 2000 the franchise began to expand its presence outside the college towns.

The first restaurant outside of Atlanta was opened in Athens, Georgia, close to the University of Georgia. Though it was opened in that location until 2006 and in 2007 was relocated to downtown Athens.

Pizza served at Mellow Mushroom comes in three different sizes: small which has 10 inches, medium which has a size of 14 inches and large which is 16 inches. Though, at some locations, individual slices can be bought late at night or at lunch. Besides pizza, in their restaurants, you can also eat appetizers, calzones, hoagies, salads, and burgers. Also, they provide a gluten-free menu and a vegan menu. Moreover, customers with special dietary needs are provided with an allergen and a special diet menu. Kids have not been forgotten and they have their own menu as well. At the customer’s request, this restaurant offers catering services for special events.

Among the specialty pizzas, you can find the Maui Wowie, Gourmet White, Buffalo Chicken, House Special, Philosophers Pie, Magical Mystery Tour, Red Skin Potato Pie, Mega-Veggie, Mellowterranean, Funky Q Chicken, Thai Dye, Holy Shitake, and Bayou Bleu. For example, a small pizza costs anywhere between $12 and $15, a medium pizza costs $22 to $25 and for a large pizza, you will have to pay $25 to $30.

Expect to pay anywhere between $6 and $9 for a half-size hoagie and $12 for whole hoagies. Among the hoagie selections, you can find the Shrimp Hoag’ Boy, the Meatball, Portobello and Cheese, Steak and Cheese, Righteous Portobello Reuben, Avocado, Tofu, Chicken and Cheese, Tempeh, Ham/Turkey and Cheese, Spiked Sausage, Mushroom Club, Jerk Chicken and Italian. Calzones cost anywhere between $9 and $15 and include Steak/Chicken and Cheese or House Cheese selections. For a small-size salad, you will have to pay $5 to $8, while regular-sized salads cost anywhere between $9 and $12. Some of the most famous salads are Caesar, Greek, Tossed, Chef, and Enlightened Spinach. Also, you have the option to build your own salads, hoagies, and calzones.
