Brand History

The story of Church’s Chicken starts back on April 17, 1952, when the first restaurant was opened by George W. Church Sr. in downtown San Antonio, Texas across from Alamo. At that time the name of the restaurant was “Church’s Fried Chicken to Go”. These days the company’s headquarters are located in Sandy Springs, Georgia and the chain has more than 1,700 restaurants all over the United States of America.

In the first years of activity, the Church’s Chicken menu included only chicken items, but in 1955 jalapenos and fries also were added. At the end of the 1960s, there were more than 100 Church’s Chicken restaurants in seven states from America. It became a publicly held company pretty soon and the national headquarters complex was opened in San Antonio, Texas.

Moreover, in the 1970s Church’s Chicken company was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Also, in the 1970s the 1000^th Church’s Chicken restaurant was opened in Phoenix, Arizona. The first restaurant outside the United States was opened in Vancouver, Canada.

In the 1980s the chain operated a hamburger franchise as well, but for a short period of time. In 1989 Church’s Chicken merged with Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits and so it became the second-largest restaurant chain in America. In the same period, Church’s Chicken introduced in its menu the Big Chicken sandwich which was a real success with more than 1400 sandwiches sold in only one day.

In the 1990s the ownership of the chain was taken by AFC Enterprises and it moved the headquarters of the company to Sandy Springs, Atlanta, Georgia. However, AFC Enterprises operated and owned the chain only for 12 years and after that sold it to the private equity firm, Arcapita. Since Arcapita is an Islamic venture capital firm, all the pork products were removed from the menu. Also, all the beverage products changed to Coca-Cola.

The chain was bought by Fleischer & Lowe on August 10, 2009.

Church’s Chicken restaurant is specialized in serving tasty fried chicken meals and their popular dish is the original chicken, but they also serve well-marinated spicy chicken. The boneless chicken wings are served alongside the customer’s choice of sweet and spicy, honey barbeque or buffalo sauces. The price of the boneless wings is anywhere between $5.5 and $6.5 and these are made to order. For the tender strips, you will have to pay anywhere between $5.5 and $7.5. These are made of hand-battered white meat chicken.

Church’s Chicken restaurant does not serve only chicken, but also very tasty sandwiches that cost anywhere between $1.5 and $3.5. One of the customers’ favorites is the Big Tex Tender Sandwich which contains crispy all-white meat tender strips, mayo, pickles, and lettuce. The Original Chicken Sandwich contains crispy chicken, fresh lettuce, and mayo, while the double chicken and cheese sandwich is made of two chicken patties, a sesame seeds bun, two slices of American cheese, lettuce, and mayo.

You have the possibility to order just one chicken item or mix them. These include different chicken parts like thighs, breasts, legs, and wings. The family meals are served in different sizes of ten, fifteen, or twenty pieces. As for the side, you can choose between fried okra, honey butter biscuits, corn, mashed potatoes, Cole slaw, fries, jalapeno cheese combers, baked macaroni and cheese, and jalapeno peppers. These sides cost anywhere between $1.5 and $5 each. For the dessert, which is limited to their apple pie, you should expect to pay anywhere between $1.5 and $2.5.

Church’s Chicken offers its customers the possibility to dine-in or to order their food via the drive-thru. In general, the restaurant is open from 10:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. seven days a week, but it depends on the location. This restaurant does not make deliveries yet and does not accept reservations.

Besides serving tasty food, the chain is also involved in its community through supporting neighborhood programs such as the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department Community Christmas Event and the Church’s Scholar Program.
