Brand History

The Pizza Hut concept was born in 1958 in Wichita, Kansas on the initiative of brothers Dan and Frank Carney. The two of them and their friend John Bender had the idea of opening a pizzeria, a rarity at the time, believing that this business could be successful. With the help of the family, they obtained funds of $600 and opened the first Pizza Hut restaurant, in a small space in the center of the town where they lived. The small pizza restaurant had only 25 seats and used second-hand equipment to prepare pizza.

They chose the name inspired by the building they had rented, which looks like a shack (Hut) and so they named this little restaurant Pizza Hut. On the night they opened the restaurant, the three businessmen offered free pizza to passers-by to convince them of the quality of the product and to encourage them to visit their small pizzeria. A year later, Pizza Hut spread throughout the Kansas region, and people were thrilled to dine at an exclusive pizza restaurant.

Starting in the ’60s, Pizza Hut started to be known as a well-known brand, and so other restaurants were opened under its franchise. In 1962, the Carney brothers bought Bender’s share of the business, and Robert Chisholm joined them. In the following years, the number of Pizza Hut franchises had reached 145 units across America, proof of the huge success of the restaurant-pizzeria concept.

As expected, the conquest of new territories followed, and soon after, the first Pizza Hut franchise was opened in Canada. In the ’70s new locations opened in Germany in Munich and in Australia in Sydney, and soon the restaurant number 500 opened in Nashville, Tennessee.

The expansion continues with the acquisition of 80% of Ready Italy, a manufacturer of crispy pizza crust, and the association with Sunflower Beef. Thus, the menus in Pizza Hut restaurants offered, in addition to the delicious “Thin ‘n Crispy” pizza, a variety of sandwiches as well. In 1971 Pizza Hut became the largest pizzeria chain in the world with a total of over 1000 locations. The company’s revenue was $1 million a week, from locations in the United States alone.

Another important step followed, with the listing of the company on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and thus a record number of 410,000 common shares were then offered to the public. The company is acquiring three new restaurant divisions: Next Door, Taco Kid, and Flaming Steer.

The Pizza Hut brand has established a unique design concept for its restaurants. The newly opened restaurants had to respect the company logo, the roof had to be red with a size between 35 and 65 meters. The entire construction would be made of distinctive brick, and each restaurant would have between 60 and 120 seats.

Since 1990, Pizza Hut has focused on accessibility, adding new drive-through units and Pizza Hut Express. Express locations originated in malls, but have expanded into schools, sports arenas, office buildings, and even major airports.

In 2006, Whitbread, Yum! Brands partner sells its shares in the company to the majority group, Pizza Hut thus becoming a 100% Yum! Brand.

Today, Pizza Hut continues to grow, adding new locations to the more than 18,000 already existing in 100 countries around the world and seeking to conquer new territories.
