Brand History

In 1960, Tom Monaghan and his brother, James, borrowed $500 to buy a nearby pizzeria in Ypsilanti, Michigan.

The restaurant’s previous owners, Dominic and Nick, had named it Dominick’s Pizzeria. In less than a year, Tom bought his brother’s share for a Volkswagen Beetle, and by 1965 he had opened two more pizzerias and changed his name to Domino’s Pizza.

Pizzerias were losing money, but with the experience he had gained up until that point, Tom Monaghan knew how to literally make up for the losses. He removed the sandwiches from the menu and focused on preparing and delivering pizza.

He invented an insulated box that not only kept the pizza warm but also supported the weight of several pizza boxes on top. This allowed him to deliver several pizzas at once, without the top of the box flattening and the cheese sticking to the lid. This is how the modern pizza delivery service was born.

Monaghan put so much emphasis on delivery that in 1973 he offered to guarantee pizza delivery within 30 minutes of receiving the order, otherwise the delivery would have been free. In this way, the founder of Domino’s Pizza managed to spread throughout North America.

In 1998, Monaghan sold its share capital in Domino’s Pizza to Bain Capital.

Bain Capital mismanaged Domino’s, which led to a default. In 2001, Monaghan, who still owned 7% of the shares, returned to the company’s management. By 2004, the company had regained its credibility and was listed on the stock exchange.

Today, Domino’s Pizza is present worldwide, with franchises in many cities around the world.

However, Domino’s has not always been as successful as it is today. In the period 2008-2009, in the midst of the financial crisis, the company registered a significant number of complaints about the quality of services and products of a very low level. So, the company had to go through a radical change in the way it operates, which also came with a change in the management of the company.

The new management made changes to the original recipe and started a strong marketing campaign combined with a new delivery system, being one of the first companies to introduce online orders and the possibility of tracking the order. The changes brought the desired effect, and the restaurant chain became popular again, in 2019 being the largest pizza seller in the world, thus surpassing the biggest rival, Pizza Hut.

Our review

Domino's PizzaDomino’s Pizza has an application that allows you to order your favorite pizza just by simply opening the app and guarantees delivery in a maximum of 30 minutes. But they got involved in serious lawsuits in the past because of this promise. Though, they will bring your pizza still hot as soon as possible. Most of the restaurants function as delivery only or take-out, although there are some locations that have an eat-in seating area.

The menu from every location is customized according to the local needs and tastes, but everywhere you will find their famous pizza. These pizzas can be of different sizes from small, medium, and large to extra-large and with a wide range of flavors like hot spicy, original cheese and tomato, Hawaiian or pepperoni passion. You can add some “extras” to your pizza to create the perfect pizza.

Besides pizza, there is a large selection of sides like potato wedges, specialty bread, and chicken wings. As a dessert, you can choose between brownies, ice cream, and homemade cookies. It is recommended to try the lava cake and the Wisconsin 6 Cheese deep pan with garlic bread.

The Domino’s Pizza menu prices are affordable and start from $6 and go up to $18 for a pizza, depending on its size, flavor, and crust type. The prices of the sides and the desserts are anywhere between $3 and $8.
