Brand History

Long John Silver’s restaurant has a long history filled with franchise drama and management changes. The company has started as a hamburger stand in Shelbyville, Kentucky in 1929, owned by Jerome Lederer. Even though this business was founded during the Great Depression, it still was a success. In the year of 1946, Jerome Lederer founded Jerrico Inc. and opened a new restaurant named Five and Dime.

Warren W. Rosenthal was hired by Mr. Lederer as the manager of Long John Silver’s. These two have met during college when Rosenthal had rented a room from Lederer. Rosenthal had the idea to open a seafood fast food restaurant, but before opening this restaurant he took his time and analyzed the competitors such as H. Salt Fish and Chips franchise.

After some research and inspiration from the pirate’s fantasy adventure, Treasure Island, Lederer opened the Long John Silver’s restaurant. By June 1976 there were more than 621 restaurants opened. The company was constantly growing until it had to face bankruptcy. Triarc Companies, Inc. intended to purchase this seafood restaurant chain for $75 million in cash and $450 million in assumed debt, but unfortunately, the deal fell through.

So, the company was owned around 80% by Credit Suisse First Boston. Practically, they had owned the restaurant chain. Eventually, Long John Silver’s was bought by A&W for $227.5 million. At that time A&W company was owned by Yorkshire Global Restaurants and in March 2002 they joined YUM! Brands.

Nowadays there are more than 630 Long John Silver’s locations all over the United States of America and Canada.

The Long John Silver’s menu prices differ from state to state because of the nature of the fish market. Though, the differences are a few cents to a dollar most of the time. One of the most popular meals from their menu is the 2 fish meal that costs around $8 and includes 2 sides of your choice and 2 hush puppies.

There is a wide variety of meals you can choose from and due to the fact that this is a seafood restaurant, the majority of the dishes will include a seafood item. Also, they offer combo meals of chicken and fish. For the kids’ meals, you will have to pay around $5.

In general, the food service at John Long Silver’s is fast and the wait times tend to be small. Moreover, the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Though, expect to wait longer during lunch and dinner rushes as these are the busiest times.

The interior design of the Long John Silver’s restaurants is nautically themed, trying to create a relaxing and low-key dining experience. At some locations, you may even find surfboards.
