Brand History

Portillo's menu itemsThe story of Portillo’s restaurant starts back in 1963, when Dick Portillo invested all of his savings, more exactly $1,100, on a hot dog stand. At first, he was struggling, but with time the company expanded and now there are multiple locations.

In the beginning, the restaurant was named The Dog House but it was renamed Portillo’s in 1967.  By the early 1970s, there were many Portillo’s restaurants opened and so Portillo realized that his business has something special to offer. Also, he was inspired by his experience in the U.S. Marine Corps and adopted four core principles for his restaurant: cleanliness, quality, attitude, and service.

It seems that the secret of Portillo’s success is the combination of those four elements with the environment pleasant to the senses, fast lines, and good food.

In its early days, Portillo’s menu included the Chicago staples such as the Italian beef, the Vienna Beef hot dog, the Polish sausages, and the Italian sausages. With time salads, fish, chicken, and a prized chocolate cake created by Portillo’s daughter-in-law were all introduced to the menu.

Nowadays there are 67 restaurants in a few states from America. The restaurant expanded also outside of its native Illinois, in states like Indiana and Florida.

Our review

There are Portillo’s restaurants that offer their customers intimate seating, but there are also diner-styled locations that are able to accommodate a lot of guests at one table.

The meals served at Portillo’s are very tasty and offer the guests the best of Illinois in terms of food.

If you are going for the first time to a Portillo’s restaurant and don’t know what to choose from their menu it is recommended to order the baby back ribs. As for the drinks, the malts, smoothies, and shakes are some of the bests.

Portillo’s restaurant received almost all-positive reviews from its customers. They are satisfied with the customer service and the food.
