History

Glen Bell, a big fan of Mexican food, thought that a better option for a burger would be to serve beef meatballs with shredded salad, grated cheese, and chili sauce in a suitable wrapper for a convenient price to those who were always on the run.

It was Glen W. Bell who, in 1951 came up with the idea of selling crispy tacos from the window of his burger stand, laying the foundation for the Mexican Taco Bell restaurant chain, known to millions of people around the world.

After his success with hotdog and burger stands, Glen Bell took his business even further and did the unimaginable: he conquered people all over the world by opening the first Taco Bell in Downey, California in the year 1962. To everyone’s surprise, Taco Bell soon became (in fact, didn’t take too long) a success. Just 5 years after the opening of the first Taco Bell, Bell’s stand had reached millions of people in the United States to discover, rediscover, and fall in love with the taco, even in various shapes and flavors, such as Taco`n Taco, a taco in a taco, or Naked Chicken Taco, a taco-shaped chicken schnitzel.

In an interview given a few years before his death, Bell said he never forgot his first taco shopper who came to one of his three booths called Bell’s Hamburgers and Hot Dogs in San Bernardino, California: “He was wearing a suit and while he was biting his tacos, the sauce was running down on his sleeve and dripping down on his tie. Then Bell said, “Ah, I lost him!”. But then he came to the window again and said “It was good. Give me another one!”. This confession appeared in the book “Taco Titan: The Glen Bell Story”, a biography signed by Debra Lee Baldwin.

From that story until 1978, when Glen Bell sold the restaurant chain to PepsiCo, it already had 868 Taco Bell locations. PepsiCo has expanded its restaurant chain since it bought Taco Bell. In 1997 it renamed the fast-food chain to Tricon Global Restaurants, a name that was changed again in 2002 to Yum Brands.

The Taco Bell logo, like the name, first appeared in 1962. Initially, the emblem was a mere wordmark, with no trademark bells. Instead of using a unique image, Glen decided to focus on the memorable name of the restaurant, written in funky capital letters.

The bright colors of blue/green, orange, red, and yellow caught the attention of potential diners while reflecting the energy and passion of the food chain.

Some experts say that the choice of colors was intended to convey the selection of simple ingredients available to customers, from golden cheese to crispy taco shells.

Over time, the original Taco Bell logo has evolved, and the iconic bell has become a much more central part of the company’s image. The shape of the bell was adopted in 1985 and has remained a part of all Taco Bell logos ever since.

Today, according to the company, more than 2 billion tacos and 1 billion burritos are sold annually in Taco Bell locations in the United States and around the world.

Glen’s legacy now lives on in over 7,000 Taco Bell restaurants around the world. It lives through the millions of customers who visit Taco Bell each week for that unique experience that no other restaurant can offer. Through every innovation brought to the products. Through the smiles of those who create, serve, and enjoy delicious Taco Bell food. Glen’s legacy can be found in anything Taco Bell does today, tomorrow, and beyond.
