Brand History

The history of TGI Fridays starts back in 1965 when Alan Stillman wanted to build a place where single women and men can meet and spend time in a casual atmosphere. So, he opened his first restaurant in New York, on the East Side of Manhattan close to the Queensboro Bridge on the corner of East 63rd and 1st Avenue.

Stillman converted his vision into reality with $10,000, from which $5,000 was his own savings and the rest of $5,000 was borrowed from his mother. This is how much he paid for a neighborhood bar.

However, at that time it was not a common thing to see a bar and restaurant only for single people. But Stillman’s idea was a success thanks to the changes in the gender roles from the women’s movement.

Alan Stillman started to franchise TGI Fridays in 1971, and by the year 1983, there were more than 100 restaurants opened. Also, the company went public that same year. Though it became private again in 1989 and the branding changed to a more family-friendly casual dining atmosphere.

Nowadays there are more than 870 TGI Fridays restaurants in around 60 countries all over the world. This was the first American restaurant opened in the Russian Federation after the fall of the Soviet Union.
