Brand history

Bruegger’s Bagel story starts back in 1983 with Mike Dressell and Nordahl Brue. That year they opened their first store in Troy, New York. No other place was better to build this company than the home of the legendary New York bagel. In order to develop their delicious products, the founders worked for around two and a half years with a professional bagel baker.

They used the same baking process that was used in the early 1900s. After preparing the bagel dough, every batch is kettle boiled to make sure they are chewy and soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Then, they are baked in a stone-hearted oven in small quantities, to ensure their freshness all day.

Over time Bruegger’s Bagel company went through different changes in ownership. Sun Capital Partners and James J Greco bought the brand in 2003. There was another change in 2011 when the business was purchased by the French company “Group Le Duff”. In 2017 the bagel chain was bought by JAB Holding Company, which is the current owner of Bruegger’s Bagel.

Nowadays there are around 260 Bruegger’s Bagel locations across the United States, as well as in the District of Columbia and Canada. Moreover, in 2013 they opened their first location in Europe, in Rennes, France.

Bruegger’s Bagels holds the Guinness World Record for creating the largest bagel in the world in 20014. It weighed 868 pounds and needed ten hours of baking, 900 gallons of water, and 1,100 pounds of dough.

With a history of almost 40 years, Bruegger’s Bagel was committed to “time-honored tradition” and offered superior quality bagels.
