Brand History

A small family-owned restaurant from a small town in rural Wisconsin was the basis of Culver’s business. On July 18, 1984, the first restaurant was opened in Sauk City by Lea and Graig Culver and Craig’s parents, Ruth and George. George’s father was a cheese maker and his grandfather was a farmer from Wisconsin.

Ruth and George Culver purchased their first restaurant in 1964. They formed a wonderful team with their children, who spent their childhood working in the restaurant. During this time they learned how to cook tasty food to order and how to serve this food in a friendly manner. This family business was a model for the next successful restaurants that opened in the following years.

Craig Culver had the idea to open a new restaurant in 1981. He introduced his favorite childhood treat into the menu, the fresh frozen custard, and his mother’s homemade hamburgers.

This mix became what is known today as Culver’s Butterburgers and Fresh Frozen Custard. So, in 1984 the first location was opened in Sauk City and the first franchise was opened in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The first location that opened outside Wisconsin was in Buffalo, Minnesota.

Culver Franchising System, Inc. company founded in 1987, with its headquarters in Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin manages the Culver’s restaurants.

Over time, Culver’s company expanded all over the United States, but the majority of the locations can be found in the Midwestern region. There are more than 800 restaurants in states such as Arizona, Wisconsin, Texas, North Dakota, Florida, Idaho, South Carolina, Wyoming, Tennessee, Minnesota, Kentucky, Iowa, Ohio, Nebraska, Indiana, Kansas, Illinois, Colorado, Michigan, Utah, and Missouri. The capacity of the restaurants is 98 to 118 customers.

There are anywhere between 30 and 75 full-time employees, plus another 10 summertime employees. This company developed a successful franchise system thanks to hard work, tasty comfort food, fresh made-to-order meals, and client satisfaction.

Culver’s is also involved in the community through various projects. The executive leadership of the company includes the Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Craig Culver, the Co-founder and Vice President Lea Culver, the President and Chief Operating Officer Phil Keiser, and the Chief Financial Officer Joe Koss.
