Brand History
Jersey Mike’s Subs has a fascinating history. In 1956 the first restaurant in Point Pleasant, New Jersey was opened under the name of Mike’s Subs.
This restaurant is still operating these days. In only five years the company became a successful business and a leader in the original submarine sandwich. Its personalized service was the trademark of the first restaurant.
Peter Cancro, a 14-year-old high school student started to work at the first restaurant in 1971. He liked to work there during the summer vacations and serve loyal clients.
When he was 17 he heard rumors that the owner of this chain was thinking about selling the company. So, Peter Cancro became the only owner of the Mike’s Subs brand, with the help of an investment from his football coach.
Cancro opened more restaurants in a short time after buying the company. The new locations kept the personalized service style used by the first restaurant. The loyal clients of Mike’s Subs wanted more restaurants to be opened closer to their hometowns. This made Peter Cancro start franchising in 1987.

Peter changed the name of the restaurant to Jersey Mike’s Subs when he started to franchise to honor the authenticity of the place where the sub sandwich came to life. Nowadays, the company evolved into Jersey Mike’s Franchise System Inc. and has more than 1,500 locations that are open and under development. In each of these locations, the personalized service of the first opened restaurant is still reflected.
Our Review
Jersey Mike’s Subs menu contains various food items including the Chicken Caesar Wrap, BLT, desserts, Kid’s Meals, and many more. The available sizes for subs are mini (4 ½ inches), regular (1 ½ inches), and giant (15 inches).
Thanks to their connection to the past of the company, Cancro Special and Jersey Mike’s Famous Philly are the recommended items from the menu.
The cost of the mini-subs is anywhere between $4.5 and $5.5, for the regular subs you will have to pay anywhere between $6 and $7.5, and the price of the giant sub is anywhere between $10 and $12.5. Clients love the amount of meat from the awesome subs. According to them, subs are an ideal lunch on the go, especially on a busy, cold day.
Jersey Mike’s Subs offers a selection of fresh vegetables that add distinct flavors and textures to their sandwiches. Standard vegetable toppings include lettuce, which provides a fresh and crunchy element, and tomatoes, offering juiciness and a touch of sweetness.
Onions are also a popular choice for those who enjoy a more pungent flavor. Green bell peppers add a slightly sweet and crisp component to the subs, while banana peppers introduce a mild, tangy kick. For those who prefer a bit of spice, jalapeños are available. Pickles are another classic option, bringing a tangy crunch to the sandwich.
The combination of these vegetables is part of what Jersey Mike’s refers to as “Mike’s Way,” which typically includes dressing subs with onions, lettuce, tomato slices, grilled fresh portabella mushrooms, parmesan, mayo, red wine vinegar, oil, and spices like rosemary. Customers have the flexibility to customize their subs with these toppings according to their preferences. It’s important to note that the availability of specific vegetables might vary by location, as well as seasonally.
The ambiance at Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurants is unique, say the customers. The staff is friendly and knows everything about the company’s history and the items on the menu.
The bread served there is freshly baked every day and the products and meat used are of the highest grade. The overall impression of the customers is a positive one. However, some people complained about the somewhat high prices.
The most important Jersey Mike Subs location is the one that opened in 1956 in New Jersey. Due to the quick-service style, the restaurants are busy during the lunch and dinner hours.
