The History of The Company

The brand’s story began in 1940 when the two brothers Maurice and Richard McDonald thought about opening a barbeque restaurant in California. Right from the start, they noticed that among their most bought items were hamburgers, which, in 1948, made them convert the whole restaurant into a hamburger stand.

At about the same time, they also coined the “Speedee Service System”, which revolutionized the whole fast-food industry and made it into what it is today.

Following its great success, the business started to offer franchising possibilities around the year 1953, and shortly after, the first location under the franchise was opened in Phoenix. The second franchise was opened around the same year in Downey, California. This is the place that to this day is known as the oldest operating McDonald’s in the U.S.

A historic change for McDonald’s happened in 1955 when the two brothers met Ray Kroc who almost immediately saw the big potential of the American fast food brand and their business model.

Their collaboration led to a lot of disagreements between the three, and soon after, Kroc bought the company completely from Richard and Maurice McDonald and started a global expansion. In 1953 the company trademarked the well-known golden arches. In 1958 a new version of the arches was made and trademarked.

Over the years, regardless of the difficulties they faced, the brand kept to its core values and even today continues to provide convenient, tasty, and affordable food. Their global expansion reached 119 countries up until now and they gain popularity and new clients each day.
