Brand history

Donatos Pizza story started in the 1960s with the college student Jim Grote. He wanted to build a restaurant that would be based on three pillars: treat others the way you want to be treated, create superior pizzas, and hire great people. In 1963 he bought his first location for $1,300 and started his business.

The new restaurant was a great success and became very popular among the Columbus college students and their families, as well. It was, mainly, thanks to their focus on great customer service and superior products.

In 1991 Grote started franchising his restaurant and this is where the business really took off. By 2019 around two dozen franchisees were opened, that operated more than one hundred Donatos Pizza restaurants in eleven states including West Virginia, Alabama, Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Ohio.

In 1999 McDonald’s bought Donatos Pizza trying to expand its own brand and enter into the pizza industry. Even though McDonald’s chain was very popular, in 2003 they decided to refocus on their main products and re-sell the business to Jim Grote and his daughter, Jane Abell.

Even today Jane Abell is strongly involved in the business. Nowadays there are more than 370 Donatos Pizza restaurants located in twenty-two states, with most of the locations being opened in and around Ohio. Also, the original restaurant is still open and is as popular and busy as on its first day.

For instance, their Donatos Pizza’s signature dish comes in a wide variety of flavors including vegan is Greek to me, serious cheese, chicken bruschetta, pepperoni, hot chicken, the works, sriracha jack, classic trio, chicken spinach mozzarella, veggie, pepperoni zinger, Founder’s favorite, margarita, serious meat, serious pork, Hawaiian, mozzarella trio, Mariachi beef or Mariachi chicken. Also, you can build your own pizza.

Donatos Pizza offers three main pizza sizes including large, which is 14 inches; medium, which is 12 inches and individual, which is 7 inches. The prices depend on the toppings. In general, a large pizza costs around $20, a medium pizza is priced at less than $17 and for a small pizza, you will have to pay less than $9.
