Frisch’s is a regional restaurant chain in the United States of America, based in Cincinnati, Ohio. It was for many years a Big Boy franchise, but in 2001 became the only owner of the Big Boy trademark.

Frisch’s menu includes classic American food items such as cheeseburgers, pancakes, fish ‘n chips, chicken tenders, burgers, and sandwiches, but also burritos, wraps, shrimp, and French toast. Brand history

The first Frisch’s Big Boy restaurant was opened in 1947 by David Frisch. It was located at 3250 Central Parkway, north of downtown Cincinnati and was known as “Big Boy One”. This eatery was mainly a drive-in, with only eight counter seats but enough space to accommodate 60 vehicles to benefit from curb service.

Frisch’s uses this date for its anniversary, but its history started way before this. The first family member in the food industry was David Frisch’s father, Samuel Frisch. He opened a lunch room in 1905 on Freeman Avenue in West End (now Queensgate).

In 1923 Samuel Frisch passed away and David Frisch and his brothers took over the restaurant business.

David wanted to have his own business and in the 1930s sold his share and opened two restaurants, one in Oakley and one in Norwood. Unfortunately, he went bankrupt.

Though David was helped by Fred Cornuelle, the president of Ohio Gravel Co. to open a drive-in restaurant, Frisch’s Mainliner, in 1939 at 5956 Wooster Pike in Fairfax. After a few years, David purchased the Mainliner from Cornuelle.

In 1946 David met Wian of Bob’s Big Boy and was impressed by Wian’s double-decker hamburger. It was made with two smaller patties which can be cooked faster on the grill and Frisch recognized this benefit. So, he made a deal with Wian to be a Big Boy franchiser in Florida, Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky. David Frisch opened the first Big Boy franchise in 1946 and it was located on Central Parkway.

In 2001 Frisch’s agreed with the Big Boy Restaurant to not be a franchisee anymore, but the only owner of the Big Boy trademark in Ohio and nearby areas.

In 2015 Frisch’s was purchased by an Atlanta-based private equity fund for $175 million.

Nowadays there are 84 Frisch’s restaurants located in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, including three Big Boy stores in Louisville, eleven in Cincinnati, and six in Dayton.

Our review

Frisch’s sandwiches are different from those you can find at other Big Boy restaurants as they are made with tartar sauce instead of Thousand Island dressing and the bun doesn’t have sesame seeds.

Frisch’s serves breakfast all day at the cost of $5 to $12 per dish. Some of the breakfast options include the Big Boy’s Big Breakfast, 3 Pancakes, and Meat Breakfast, 2 Eggs & Meat Breakfast, French Toast & Meat Breakfast, 2 Eggs & Toast, Sausage Burrito Combo, Farmers Omelet, Bacon Burrito, Biscuit Sandwich, Ham & Cheese Omelet, Protein Breakfast Sides and more.

Their combo meals cost anywhere between $9.50 and $14.50, and include the Bacon Cheeseburger, the Fish Sandwich Combo, the Pork Tenderloin Combo, the Buffalo Chicken Wrap, Grilled Cheese, the California Big Boy Combo, and the Deluxe Big Boy, to name a few.

Wraps, baskets, and melts are priced at $6 to $10 and you are able to choose between Fish ‘n Chips, Chicken Tender Basket, Buffalo Chicken Tenders, Turkey Club Wrap, Buffalo Chicken Wrap, Patty Melt, Grilled Cheese, Club Melt and Chicken Tender Basket.

Frisch’s offers also a Kids’ menu that includes meals such as Chicken Fingers & Fries, Pancakes with Sausages or Bacon, Chili & Spaghetti, Cheeseburger, Hamburger, and Mac & Cheese. Each of these costs anywhere between $4.50 and $6.50.

Soups and salads cost anywhere between $5 and $10, while for a dessert such as cheesecake, apple pie, cheery pie, hot fudge cake, or pecan pie you will have to pay $5.50 to $16.
