Brand History

The history of Panda Express starts with Ming-Tsai Cherng, his son Andrew J.C. Cherng, and Andrew’s future wife Peggy Cherng. In the 1960s they migrated from Chine to the United States, but actually, Peggy emigrated from Burma because at that time she wasn’t part of the family yet.

This family had the dream to open their own restaurant and so they did. In 1973, they opened the first Panda Express restaurant in California. In the beginning, there offered food inspired by the Mandarin and Szechwan of their home-country China.

This restaurant became very popular in a short period of time thanks to the authentic Mandarin and Szechwan dishes and fast service. So, in 1983 the first international Panda Express restaurant was opened. Besides the traditional Chinese dishes, their menu includes chicken dishes and hamburgers as well.

The Panda Express franchise is expanding constantly. If in 1992 there were only 50 locations in the United States of America, now there are more than 2,200 restaurants all over the world.
