Brand History

Del Taco was founded by David Jameson and Ed Hackbarth. Their first restaurant was opened on September 16, 1964, in Yermo, California. The company was very successful and this led to the opening of new locations. In a short period of time since the opening of the restaurant, Dick Naugle joined Jameson and Hackbarth, and they founded Red-E-Food Systems, Inc. to start franchising the Del Taco brand. However, in the early 1970s, Dick Naugle left the company. After that, the name was changed to Del Taco, Inc.

Hackbarth and Jameson sold to W.R. Grace and Company the right to use the Del Taco name in the United States in 1976. So, the chain continued to grow and by 1978 there were 100 locations. Also, the menu has expanded and more food items were introduced such as quesadillas, ice cream sundaes, and bun tacos.

Del Taco merged with the Naugle’s restaurant chain in 1988 and this led to an increase in the geographic coverage and size. Moreover, the restaurant began to stay open throughout the entire night.

The company started to launch various initiatives to improve the whole customer experience and to promote the image of the brand. These initiatives included a new logo and designs for the restaurants. Also, the restaurant chain regained its exclusive rights to use the name “Del Taco” from W.R.Grace and Company. After these changes, the company was able to open new stores outside of California, but also in the Northeast Corridor, Las Vegas, Missouri, Nevada, and St. Louis markets. By the year 2008 around 500 Del Taco restaurants were opened.

Unfortunately, in 1993 the company filed for bankruptcy and went through many challenges. In 2015 it was purchased by Levy Acquisition Corporation and nowadays there are almost 600 restaurants located all over the United States, with the most in the Western area.

Del Taco prides itself that its food items taste better than other eateries because they are made with the freshest ingredients to order. Some of the fresh meals include the freshly grilled marinated chicken, the slow-cooked beans made from scratch, the hand-made Pico de Gallo, and the hand-grated cheddar cheese.

Be prepared to pay anywhere between $3 and $8 for a taco. There are many different options you can choose from such as Salsa Fresca Chicken Taco, Street Tacos, Regular Taco, Flatbread Tacos, Grilled Chicken Taco, Beer Battered Fish Taco, and Double Beef Classic Taco.

Also, burritos come in many different types such as Classic Chicken Burrito, Epic Carne Asada Burrito, Eight Layer Veggie Burrito, Epic Grilled Chicken Avocado Burrito, Del Beef Burrito, Epic Steak, and Potato Burrito, Del Combo Burrito, Epic Chicken Chipotle Ranch Burrito, and Epic Steak and Guac Burrito. Expect to pay anywhere between $5 and $9 for one of these.

The food items under the American Grill category cost anywhere between $5 and $8, and include Crinkle Cut Fries, Double Del Cheeseburger, Chili Cheddar Fries, Bacon Double Del Cheeseburger, Deluxe Chili Cheddar Fries, Carne Asada Fries, and Regular Cheeseburger.

Breakfast items are priced between $3 and $8, and include the Egg and Cheese Burrito Meal, Bacon and Egg Quesadilla, Epic Scrambler, and Breakfast Tacos. If you like to eat handcrafted salads such as Signature Taco Salad, Mexican Chopped Chicken Salad, or Avocado, Bacon, and Chicken Salad, you will have to pay $7 to $9. Also, for the Combos and Fiesta packs, you will have to pay anywhere between $7 and $15.

The customers’ favorites are the fries, burritos, and tacos, but the fish tacos are also very appreciated. The staff is pretty friendly and the restaurants are clean.
