Brand history and connection to Forrest Gump
The first Bubba Gump restaurant was opened in 1996 in Monterey, California, and ran through a partnership between Viacom and Rusty Pelican Restaurants. However, the story of this business starts one year before, in 1995, when the entrepreneur Anthony Zolezzi purchased the rights to the name “Bubba Gump Shrimp Co” from Paramount Pictures. He was trying to help the seafood company Meridian Products, which was having some financial problems.

The line of packaged shrimp products “The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.” were sold in supermarkets all over the United States of America and across the world. In that period a friend of Zolezzi, who was working in the seafood restaurant business, proposed to him to license the name. So, Zolezzi discussed with the Rusty Pelican Restaurant and Paramount to find the first Bubba Gump restaurant. It was a real success, which determined its franchising on international markets.
In 2010, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. seafood restaurant chain was purchased by Landry’s Inc. and the headquarters of the company were moved to Houston, Texas. Before that, these were located in Hollywood, California.
Currently, there are thirty-four Bubba Gump restaurant locations all over the world. Twenty-two of these are in the United States of America, three are located in Japan, four can be found in Mexico, and one each in Qatar, Mainland China, Canada, Indonesia, and Hing Kong.
