If you are looking for a simple and unique lip piercing that will make you stand out, the Medusa piercing is an excellent choice. Also called a philtrum piercing, it is a simple bar that sits above the cupid’s bow and just below the base of the nose. It is an attractive piercing in its own right due to its placement. It’s also a great add-on that will enhance a number of different lip piercings if you want to change up your lip decoration as well. The Medusa piercing is a beautiful, subtle and versatile piercing that will give you an effortless bold look

How much does it cost?

Like with any other piercing, the cost of Medusa piercings is affected by various factors such as the type of jewelry you purchase, the professional you hire, the place where you are living, and the type of Medusa piercing (whether it is jestrum or double). Taking into account all these factors, the cost of a Medusa piercing would be anywhere between $55 and $100 for both a simple barbell piece and the procedure.

According to the Piercing Models website, the cost of Medusa piercings is greatly influenced by the experience of the piercer, with most prices being anywhere between $45 and $95.

If you are living in Phoenix, Arizona, and choose to go to Halo Precision Piercing & Jewelry for a Medusa piercing, you will have to get around $35 out of your pocket for the piercing alone. As the cost of the jewelry is not included, the final price will depend on what you desire, but also on what your physiognomy would allow.

How is Medusa piercing done?

A professional piercer should insert your lip piercing. You can choose your starting jewelry, which is usually a titanium stud. Studs are the best when it comes to healing, and once you’ve healed, you can change it to the model you want. Hoops and lip earrings aren’t ideal to start with because they move a lot on their own. But if you choose a lip earring as your first piece of jewelry, choose a larger size.

The actual process will look like this:

  1. You will choose a place;
  2. The piercer will disinfect the area around the mouth;
  3. The piercer will use a clip to hold the lip still;
  4. A puncture will be made using a sterile needle;
  5. The stud will be inserted;
  6. The area will be cleaned once more;
  7. Take good care of it and enjoy your brand-new lip jewelry!

Types of Medusa piercing

  1. Piercing Jestrum: In this case, it is also known as vertical Medusa, more than anything, because of its position. The lip is perforated one single time and the piercing is placed directly into it, allowing both sides of the jewelry to be visible (one above the lip and one inside the center of it).
  2. Double Piercing: The philtrum zone is going to be pierced two times, with one puncture under another. In general, two identical studs are used by those who chose this option.

How long should I wait before changing my Medusa piercing?

Fresh Medusa PiercingChanging it prematurely can cause complications and unwanted side effects. Make sure it’s 100% healed before swapping it out for a new design. If you’re not sure about the condition of your piercing, it’s probably still not properly healed. You can go back to your piercer and ask for advice.

Follow your aftercare routine and wait at least 3-6 months before changing your lip jewelry.

How do I take care of my Medusa piercing?

The general rule of thumb for aftercare is general good health, i.e., a healthy immune system and excellent hygiene. Lip piercings are a bit more complicated than other piercings when it comes to aftercare. As part of the jewelry is located inside your mouth, you will need to use a solution that can be used orally. Never swallow the solution, but you should buy a recovery fluid that is not harmful in any way.

Healing time is normally 6-8 weeks, but it can take up to 3 or 6 months for it to heal. There are some things you should do to help the healing process and avoid infection. Use a product, such as a piercing aftercare all-in-one spray to rinse the outside of the lips 3 times a day.

Important things to consider

According to experts, it is very important that you thoroughly brush your teeth and then gargle an antiseptic mouthwash when going to an appointment to get this piercing, to make sure that you are safe from any infections in the area of the mouth during or after the procedure. You should actually do the same things you would do when going to a dental cleaning. You should use this additional protection measure to reduce any chance of developing infections even though the piercer should also use gloves and properly clean the area with alcohol while doing the piercing.
