Brand History

The history of Red Robin starts back in 1969 when the entrepreneur Gerry Kingen purchased Sam’s Red Robin restaurant and developed it. The first location was only 1,200 square feet large and was the favorite gathering place among the students from the University of Washington.

In the first years of activity, Red Robin operated as a tavern, but later hamburgers were also added to the menu. Customers were able to choose between28 different types of hamburgers, and it determined an increase in sales.

Kingen decided to franchise his business after ten years of activity and this decision played a significant role in the development of the chain. Locations were opened in more states in America. By the year 1985, 175 Red Robin restaurants were opened.

On March 21, 2010, the original Red Robin location was closed due to the prohibitive maintenance expenses for the old building.
