Instead, Dr. Buck gave him an idea that would change the lives of Fred and many people around the world. “I think you need to open a sandwich restaurant”, said Dr. Buck.

Fred was skeptical at first, but after Dr. Buck explained how a sandwich restaurant could fund his studies, he agreed. That same evening, Fred and Dr. Buck formed the partnership that was to lead to the first Subway restaurant.

The success of the restaurant came immediately. On the first day of work, people gathered in front of the doors just before noon. Since then, the company has continued to grow. Fred and Peter’s goal was to open 32 restaurants in 10 years. Until 1974, eight years after the first restaurant was opened, Fred and Peter owned and operated 16 restaurants in the state of Connecticut – only half of their goal.

Because they both wanted to grow their business, they turned to the idea of ​​franchising – something they initially refused because it was only for “big players.” Convinced of success, Fred and Peter decided that franchising would bring it to the company. And so, Fred met his friend Bryan and offered him something that Bryan couldn’t refuse. The idea was for Bryan to borrow money from Fred and buy one of the restaurants, and if he didn’t like the business, he would return it without owing anything.

Bryan is known as the first Subway franchisor, setting the standard for the Subway business model. This allows Peter and Fred not only to reach their goal but also to surpass it. Today, after more than 50 years since its inception, Subway is the largest restaurant network in the world, with more locations in the US, Canada, and Australia than Mcdonald’s.
