Brand History

The first Captain D’s seafood restaurant was opened on August 15, 1969, in Donelson, Tennessee. In the beginning, it was named Mr. D’s Seafood and Hamburgers. The letter “D” comes from one of the foundersț last name, Ray Danner. He founded Dander Foods company, which owned and operated the restaurant.

Mr. D’s Seafood and Hamburgers grew in popularity over time and by the year 1973, there were 15 restaurants opened in the United States of America. The restaurant changed its name to Captain D’s Seafood in 1974. The same year they merged with Shoney’s, Inc. Their menu started to be focused only on seafood meals such as shrimp and fish and chips.

In 2003 Danner Foods and Shoney’s, Inc. sold the restaurant to Lone Star Funds. One year later, in 2004 Sagittarius Brands, Inc. bought the restaurant chain. Captain D’s was awarded the “Menu Masters Award” in the category “Best Menu Revamp” by the Nation’s Restaurant News in 2007.

In 2010 Sagittarius Brands, Inc. sold it to Sun Capital Partners. During this time the restaurant grew substantially. In 2013 the restaurant was bought by Centre Partners and it is still owned by them.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the company’s logo and building design changed in order to get a more updated appearance. In 2012 Captain D’s presented a whole new “21st century image” so the customers get an improved overall experience. This new image included a friendly and welcoming “coastal” vibe so the clients feel like they are at the beach.
